[00:01:11] Hello, hello. Welcome to Soulpreneur Scaling Stories. Today I have a special guest with me, Sheridan Ruth, who is an integrative somatic trauma therapist and nervous system specialist for entrepreneurs. Hello, Sheridan. Thank you so much for being here.

[00:01:29] Sheridan Ruth: Hi, thank you for having me, keen to, keen to get stuck into it, actually. Yeah. So thank you for facilitating this.

[00:01:37] Andrea Elibero: Yes, I'm really excited because I was chatting with Sheridan for a couple of minutes before pressing that record button and being the somatic work and nervous system work is something that has helped me personally so much and it's something that I love incorporating and something that I feel like just everybody really needs.

[00:01:59] So if you don't [00:02:00] mind, maybe give a little. a little background, a little bit of kind of general information about what it is you do and what it is that you specifically help entrepreneurs with.

[00:02:09] Sheridan Ruth: Yeah, absolutely. I find that it's really helpful to root ourselves in what somatic and nervous system means so that we're all on the same page. Does that feel good for you?

[00:02:18] Andrea Elibero: Oh, of course. Yes.

[00:02:21] Sheridan Ruth: So somatic basically, it comes from a Greek word, but it means to be in the body. So everything that we're looking at when we're looking at it through my work is through the lens of the body.

[00:02:31] I specifically focused on the nervous system because the nervous system creates your entire experience. So this means like, The nervous system, it has kind of a branch or a function, which is the autonomic nervous system. And it's all of what we call the smooth muscle that underlies everything that is automatic inside of your body.

[00:02:54] So it's this communication pathway that [00:03:00] communicates to the muscles in your belly, what to do in your gut, what to do in your lungs, um, related to your heartbeat, related to saliva, related to blinking, everything that is automatic in your body. And Your nervous system, specifically the autonomic nervous system, is always looking around you and filtering through its understanding of the world to give you a certain experience.

[00:03:25] That experience includes physiological symptoms such as Um, there's no way of knowing if it's tightness in your jaw or softness in your, in your jaw. How rapid heart rate or soft heart rate and slow. It also changes the thoughts that you think. It changes the emotions that you feel in the way that you've experienced them.

[00:03:44] Then it also kind of changes the impulses that you have an impulse to send an email or to run away from sending an email. Um, to write a post or to not write a post. Those are communicating examples, but Yeah, to say something or to not say something. [00:04:00] So it is the foundation of your entire experience. And so the work that I do is twofold.

[00:04:10] It is helping entrepreneurs change the way that their nervous system perceives their environment so that they get to experience their world with more ease. They have more energy, they feel more creative, they can feel more in contact with their intuition. And then we take that ease. And we create a business that is set up based on what your nervous system needs to experience that ease.

[00:04:40] And we can scale that business based on what the business needs. Visibility, sales, marketing, copywriting, content, audience, community, et cetera, and what your specific nervous system needs in order to feel anxiety free and to feel easeful. Sometimes [00:05:00] that's really deep trauma healing. Sometimes that's changing things through systems.

[00:05:04] Sometimes that's changing sales and marketing. It depends on each individual. But essentially you're using your body as a compass to understand what it is that's going to make you the most profitable and happiest entrepreneur that you can be.

[00:05:19] Andrea Elibero: So important and something that is often overlooked, especially when it comes to these like cookie cutter approaches, you know, do this, like this is the one way to do things. And I see so often that this doesn't work because of this reason, right? Because, because everybody is unique. Everybody is special.

[00:05:39] Everybody is different and everybody's pathway to their own self defined success is going to look different because what works for one person does not necessarily align with who you are. So my question that came up for me when I was listening to you speak is, so I understand this, and then at the same time I was like, [00:06:00] well, what would you say to somebody who says that you're going to be uncomfortable?

[00:06:05] Like, In your business and like before you do something new, you're going to feel scared. You're going to feel nervous. And how does this align with what you're saying in terms of of doing things so that you are at ease? Yeah,

[00:06:25] Sheridan Ruth: for ease versus everything being easy. We're actually not looking for everything to be easy. And anyone that tells you that it's that entrepreneurship is easy is lying out of their butthole. Like.

[00:06:41] Andrea Elibero: that's how they're making their sales. They're marketing. Yeah. Yeah,

[00:06:47] Sheridan Ruth: really easy. No, it won't be easy. It'll be difficult. Um, but your level of difficulty is going to be different. So, you know, I recently did a podcast episode called you're supposed to be overwhelmed. If you're [00:07:00] overwhelmed, it's probably a sign that you're doing the right thing. Because if from a nervous system point of view, Easy means not expending a lot of energy.

[00:07:13] It means safe. It means the same. If things are going to be easy, they're going to be the same. They may not be comfortable, but it is easier in that you expend less energy staying the same. Then if you do something different, everything that is different requires a level of momentum. We're moving towards easy all the time. It gets easier.

[00:07:43] Andrea Elibero: Mm

[00:07:44] Sheridan Ruth: ease within the discomfort. I don't know. Have you ever done, um, have you ever done like a, you've gotten into a shower that's really, really cold or too hot and then you kind of relax into it.

[00:07:56] Have you ever done anything like that?

[00:07:57] Andrea Elibero: Oh, yeah, of course. Yeah. Mm hmm.

[00:07:59] Sheridan Ruth: [00:08:00] Or this is a little bit graphic, but we're going to go there anyway. Have you ever Been having an orgasm and it's been really, really tight and you're feeling really constricted. And then you just kind of take a big exhale and your whole body relaxes and there's more pleasure.

[00:08:14] Andrea Elibero: hmm. Mm hmm.

[00:08:16] Sheridan Ruth: That's what business is.

[00:08:19] Andrea Elibero: I love this orgasm example cuz it's so memorable You're like, oh, yes that Yeah,

[00:08:28] Sheridan Ruth: is still going, because it's very interesting because in a nervous system perspective, your body is made to go through these, um, waves of, of tension and constriction, and then it returns back to ease. And that's actually how we create things, meaning that's how we have orgasms, and that's how we have babies.

[00:08:47] So if you're going to create a new business, You need to go through a moment of a waves of constriction, relax into this constriction. There's tension. There's pressure. Things are different. Things are new. Then we bounce back and we relax [00:09:00] and we have an orgasm. Maybe maybe you actually feel that like I'm sure you've had moments where you're with your, I had one last week.

[00:09:06] I was crying happy tears of joy, like snotty happy tears because I was so proud of my clients. You probably have had some similar things.

[00:09:15] Andrea Elibero: Hmm

[00:09:17] Sheridan Ruth: ecstasy. So the creation process of being an entrepreneur is that constriction, ease, ecstasy, frustration, constriction, ease, ecstasy. We just want you to, what I'm teaching. is how can we do that without collapsing into anxiety or doubting ourselves or being, being so frustrated like it's not working. It's like it's all gonna happen. There are gonna be waves. How can you find ease within those waves so that you sleep better, so that you're better with your kids? All of it.

[00:09:53] Andrea Elibero: yeah such an important distinction because I do feel like people can often think that, [00:10:00] oh, well, this is difficult. This is, it's not meant for me. I'm not supposed to be doing this because it's supposed to be easy. But your analogy and everything you just said is so perfect to describe it. Because anytime we're doing something new, this is, this is, A new thing, our nervous system is not, it wants to keep us safe, right?

[00:10:21] Like from the saber tooth tiger, all of that tiger, all of those things. And it's going to be a period of, Oh, what's happening? But to have the skills and to know what to do during that time to move through it is what's going to hold you there. So speaking of a lot of people listening to this, our people, our service providers who want to, pivot into something new, they are either, you know, burnt out from what they're doing, or they are just kind of stagnant and bored.

[00:10:55] And they're like, Ooh, my next level, like I'm on the verge of my next level. [00:11:00] And, and all of these things are coming up for them in this time. So what is something that maybe you can speak to this from a nervous system point of view, when you're in this point in your business, what is it that You can do to hold yourself so you can actually achieve this thing that you want to achieve in your business

[00:11:28] Sheridan Ruth: I could. I'm not going to give you a superficial answer, but I'm going to touch on it because I think it's important. So I use a methodology called body based business. It's a trademark pending, which is really exciting. Um, the first step is in the moment regulation. I have a PDF that will teach in the moment regulation, and there are millions of practitioners that are teaching in the moment regulation.

[00:11:52] I teach it slightly differently in that I teach you to read the energy in your body and utilize it. Not necessarily like a breathwork technique, but, [00:12:00] you know, maybe even essential oils or foods to regulate. And that's really supportive, but I think we can both be honest and be like, there's a thousand, there's a thousand podcasts episodes that'll teach you how to like breathe deeply and you know what I mean?

[00:12:15] So I'm going to take a somewhere else with that. If that's okay with you.

[00:12:19] Andrea Elibero: Go to all the places, please

[00:12:23] Sheridan Ruth: Um, so. Okay, so the one thing that I want you all to take away from this is that, yes, you're 100% right, we're feeling burnt out or bored because we know that there's a next level, that sensation in your body, that knowingness is so true and so real. What happens to a lot of people is that we have this creation, creation energy inside of us. I can feel it. It's right there. Oh my God.[00:13:00]

[00:13:00] And it's kind of, you can almost feel it kind of coming from like your belly. I don't know if you're, you're like nodding. So yes,

[00:13:06] Andrea Elibero: Oh, I'm nodding because I'm like feeling that like this is how I'm feeling in my business currently. So yeah.

[00:13:11] Sheridan Ruth: so funny. Cause I, I don't, I don't usually speak about this, but I'm very intuitive and I just usually like read what the person in front of me is experiencing. Is that what you're experiencing? Tell me more about it. What's happening?

[00:13:23] Andrea Elibero: We're flipping the script on the podcast interview.

[00:13:25] Sheridan Ruth: Well, let me

[00:13:26] Andrea Elibero: I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. No,

[00:13:28] Sheridan Ruth: what's happening for you.

[00:13:30] Andrea Elibero: Yeah Yeah, so this entire topic right of of pivoting of next level of the, the framework that I use is something that is relatively at this time of this recording, May of 2024, relatively new as in less than six months old.

[00:13:47] So this is something that I am sort of bringing to the surface more and more and talking about. And so I feel that like, I'm right on the edge of like, Oh, I'm this person, right? Like I'm the person that's going to be known for this thing. And, and [00:14:00] it's something that I'm so passionate about and just, and.

[00:14:02] putting all of the foundational pieces together. And it's been a long road, a coaching road, in terms of finding my place that I am so excited about. And so I'm like, oh, I'm here, I found it. And now, so that's why I feel that I'm on this edge of like, ah, you know, like, like all of the things are kind of coming easier, more easier in terms of easeful, not easy, and more intuitively and following these roads.

[00:14:27] And it's like all kind of coming together, if that makes sense.

[00:14:30] Sheridan Ruth: hmm. Even, even things such as complaining or picking fights with your significant other's beloved people or just feeling like a little bit down on yourself or anything. Do you ever have that type, or like, everyone has it. Everyone has a thing that they do when things, they're at their current capacity for ease and success.

[00:14:57] I complain. I become a [00:15:00] complainer. And then I, I like, kind of am really mean to myself. And I, I, I'm like, I expect everything to be done straight away right now. And I can get really harsh towards myself. Do you know what yours would be?

[00:15:12] Andrea Elibero: I think mine is more withdrawing and going internal. And yeah, so kind of the opposite of what you do, which is honestly why the somatic piece has been so pivotal. Because it's more of me getting in touch with the feelings and the, you know, and kind of moving through them versus sort of like pushing them back and, and ignoring them.

[00:15:32] Yeah, those aren't there. I'm going to keep going.

[00:15:36] Sheridan Ruth: Totally. Yeah. So that kind of speaks to what I'm going to share, which is we all need to identify what it is that is our upper limit. So you withdraw. I get become self critical. We all, other people. pick fights with their boyfriend or break up with their boyfriend. Other people get really sick, they might have like a flu or something.

[00:15:59] [00:16:00] We all have these things that our body does that says, Whoa, hold the brakes. It looks like it's getting really good out there and I'm not really sure about that because I've never felt that good before. Therefore, because it's, it's new, therefore it must be unsafe. And so, We need to do two things. One, you need to have somebody that you can practice with that helps you get in touch with those feelings.

[00:16:24] Unfortunately, I don't believe it's something that you can do alone. You can try, but because if you could do it alone, if your nervous system felt like it could do it alone, you would already be doing it. Your nervous system, in order to experience the depth of what it's experiencing inside, it needs nervous system support.

[00:16:46] It needs somebody sitting next to you. It needs even nature. It needs to be able to say, I don't have this just by myself. There is somebody else here for me to experience this big feeling that I've [00:17:00] been burying away for decades.

[00:17:03] Andrea Elibero: Can I go back? So I don't want you to lose your train of thought, but I wanted to go back to something that I think is really important, if that's okay.

[00:17:10] Sheridan Ruth: Yeah, absolutely.

[00:17:11] Andrea Elibero: Okay. The, that you had said was to me so important and I want to make sure to highlight it is that it was almost, I interpreted it as almost a fear of success and not a fear of failure.

[00:17:27] And this is also something that people don't realize is a thing. it's a thing. So I had a client like say this to me, this is what we'd kind of come to, that she was like this exact point, right, that like last week it happened, that she was doing things to self sabotage because of this fear of success. So I'm curious if you can kind of pause on that for a second and kind of go a little bit deeper into that and then come back to this topic.

[00:17:58] Sheridan Ruth: Such a, like a really [00:18:00] juicy one to, to pause on. I think, I don't have the statistics for this, but 75 percent of our problems are a fear of success because our nervous systems has one job, expend the least amount of energy, keeping us in the same place that we are, considering we are not dying. It's not super concerned with us leaving a legacy or writing a book or having a 100k month.

[00:18:28] Thank you. That doesn't, that's, that's not, it's the, the primal nervous system, not its biggest concern. It might be concerned with making sure that you're approved. That the people approve you, of you, or making sure you belong. Um, making sure people don't judge you, making sure people love you. But it, primarily, it's looking to expend the least amount of energy, keeping you pretty much exactly where you are.

[00:18:55] Because anything that isn't where you are right now, not dying, and where you've [00:19:00] been before, not dead, it says, well I don't really know what that is, it's unknown. And because it's unknown, I don't know how to solve the possible problems that might be there. Therefore, I'm going to give you the thoughts, feelings, emotions, sensations, and impulses that keep you exactly where you are, which is really awesome because it stops us from going and running off of a cliff.

[00:19:25] However, we don't want to stay where we are because we haven't evolved. We have like this primal energy inside of us, this primal nervous system. And then we have our soul or our prefrontal cortex, or I just, you know, the rest of us. And so You can call it fear of success, but at its essence, it's fear of the unknown

[00:19:47] Andrea Elibero: So it's unknown in either direction almost, so just unknown period and success is part of unknown.

[00:19:53] Sheridan Ruth: Yes. Well, yeah, because it doesn't,

[00:19:56] Andrea Elibero: Right.

[00:19:59] Sheridan Ruth: [00:20:00] cortex, the developed part of us, our soul can see that it will be more successful. We can see that it will be more pleasurable. It makes sense. But the primal body is like, it's unknown, but you're not going to convince me that it's safe.

[00:20:13] It's literally, that's, that's absurd. How do you know? You don't

[00:20:20] We can probably, I can think of a thousand reasons. Why success would be dangerous, can you?

[00:20:31] Andrea Elibero: What comes to me is a lot of, a lot of, I want to say mindset, but a lot of like thoughts that are like, Oh, do I deserve this? Or feeling like doubts and undeserving of what's coming next. That's the first thing that came to my mind. Mm

[00:20:47] Sheridan Ruth: more success in your system, in your body, whether this is from a past experience that you've had or even just stories that your ancestors have held. It's like, particularly as a woman, I think that there's some stuff around [00:21:00] this. Do I deserve that level? Did I really work hard enough? We get conditioned and we get these beliefs and these stories put into ourselves and then we carry them with us for generations.

[00:21:10] For more UN videos visit www. un. org So for you, you would have to sit with the question of discomfort that logically you're like, obviously, yes, I know, but you're probably carrying generations of stuff that's like, yeah, but are you sure?

[00:21:24] Andrea Elibero: right.

[00:21:24] Mm

[00:21:26] Sheridan Ruth: So that would be uncomfortable for you. Um, and you would probably want to avoid that discomfort.

[00:21:31] So you would stay exactly where you are. For me, it might be like my fear of success. I think maybe one of the bigger ones has been around being perceived. You know, I lost my hair when I was seven years old, and it was always really uncomfortable for me to be the center of attention because people would ask about my hair loss, and I didn't always want to talk about it, and that was a lot of pain for me.

[00:21:50] Um, so now my body thinks success equals spotlight, equals people asking me questions that are like perceiving me. [00:22:00] Not really sure I want to do that. And so what we need to do is we actually need to make being in the question of do I deserve this or being in the spotlight or whatever it is that your body is particularly afraid of.

[00:22:13] And we need to show it through what we call reconfirming experiences that you can experience the question of, do I deserve this without collapsing into the fear that you may not, or the shame or the guilt, or you can have that in your body, activating your body and feel embodied and feel proud and feel regulated.

[00:22:45] And I am learning, oh, I can be perceived and I can be judged. And people might say things or they might think things, but I can do that and I'm okay. And the more that I sit with that, and the more that you sit with [00:23:00] yours, and the more that we each sit with our individual fears, without shaming them, without believing the thoughts that they give us, or without taking action from that space, the safer we are.

[00:23:16] Make our success to our nervous system and then our nervous system begins to say, Oh, it actually, it actually is better. I'm now going to give you thoughts, feelings, emotions, and impulses to pursue more of that because it turns out it actually is better. You're all right. And that's what I help people do.

[00:23:40] Andrea Elibero: You look simple. No big deal.

[00:23:43] Sheridan Ruth: Okay. It's yeah. Yeah.

[00:23:47] Andrea Elibero: But so, no, 100 percent. To me, yes, 100 percent. And so life changing because it's not just your business, right? It's your business and everything in your life that [00:24:00] this affects.

[00:24:01] Sheridan Ruth: Everything in your life, every single thing in your life. I think we focus on business cause it's such a, you know, it'll highlight your stuff and also we want you to be paid well, because without being paid well, like it's very difficult to do this type of work. We, we, we really, I believe in financial empowerment for all people.

[00:24:23] So. Yeah, but it's, it's everything. It's the way that you hang out with your mom. It's the way that you date. It's the way that you speak to the person down the corner and, and buy milk or you don't buy milk, like it's everything, but you would have experienced the same. I think the way in your own personal development through your business, it changes your personal as well.

[00:24:42] Andrea Elibero: Yeah, but I think that's what's to me this is a benefit and this is why part of the reason that I love Entrepreneurship is that it is a self growth journey that you didn't sign up for that You didn't know you signed up for at the beginning, right?

[00:24:58] Sheridan Ruth: I actually laugh about that. And I [00:25:00] can ask you a question that if you knew everything that you had to experience to be where you are right now,

[00:25:05] Andrea Elibero: Mm

[00:25:06] Sheridan Ruth: have said yes to entrepreneurship in the

[00:25:07] Andrea Elibero: Okay perhaps I'm strange in this but for me a hundred percent yes, because because You I love it, you know, because, because I love this work, period. And so it's almost like a great excuse to be able to do all these things to improve myself, right? Like, it's like, oh, I have to do it for my business, you know, and it just happens to affect everything else.

[00:25:29] So because I love this work, yeah, I can imagine a lot of people like, no, my God, or like, maybe like, I don't know. Have you asked other people that? I'm curious what other people would

[00:25:38] Sheridan Ruth: I have asked other people that and everyone, I'd say it's 50, 50. I am definitely like, 100%, 150%. I'm, I feel very lucky. And I've been through phases where I'm like, if I actually knew I wouldn't have signed up, but I think that they're just phases in the journey. And it just speaks to perhaps the specific difficulty that [00:26:00] that person is experiencing that they don't want to be experiencing it.

[00:26:03] Uh, I think I'm asking as well, just to kind of reassure all of the listeners. And like, if you guys are feeling like, A little bit frustrated right now. It's okay because on the other side, you're going to be so ecstatic.

[00:26:14] Andrea Elibero: Mm hmm. Mm hmm.

[00:26:16] Yeah, and when you, or like when I look back and see how much I've grown in these past few years, both in business and in life, and how it all kind of spills over and combines, like, it's really a beautiful journey. And I'm really proud, you know, and that's what I think, what I would love for What I love is that to see women especially feel proud of themselves, feel empowered, be able to speak up more, be able to hold space, to take up space, you know, to do all of these things and to feel and all of that resulting in more confidence in themselves.

[00:26:50] And, you know, that is why I'm doing what I'm doing, you know, to help women do this and perhaps, you know, the same for you. And, and I just think [00:27:00] that it's so important. And so, It really is just the more empowered women there are out there, the better the world is. Period. So, yeah.

[00:27:10] Sheridan Ruth: Couldn't have said it better and I completely agree.

[00:27:14] Andrea Elibero: So, yes. Amazing. Um, can you please, so all of this magic that you're doing, can you tell, like, what are the different, some different options? How do you work with people?

[00:27:25] Sheridan Ruth: Okay, um, at the moment, the one program that I have, although I might do a little workshop or I have like little workshops that I'm thinking of at the moment. So you guys will have to come and find me when this is to see what's happening and what's live. Um, But consistently what I do is I do one on one work with individuals.

[00:27:45] So I have a program that is a six month program. It's called body based business. And we work together very intimately for six months to understand what it is that your nervous system needs to either build your business. I work with people who are [00:28:00] beginning and really trying to like crack. Sustainable income or to scale and take your business to new visions.

[00:28:10] The three pillars are the same regulation, trauma, healing, increasing your capacity and applying that to your business strategy. Obviously the way that we do it, go about it is very unique, depending on your nervous system and your specific vision with your business. Um, but yeah, it's a really powerful tool.

[00:28:30] We worked together for six months and you can sign up by booking anybody's sales call. Maybe I'll give you the link and you can pop that below, but you guys should be able to find me with all the other stuff and book a call and speak about it.

[00:28:43] Andrea Elibero: Amazing. And lastly, how can we stay in touch with you?

[00:28:48] Sheridan Ruth: Yes, you guys can find me. My own podcast is called Embodied Entrepreneur with Sheridan Ruth. E M B O D I E D, Entrepreneur with Sheridan Ruth. Or you can find me on [00:29:00] Instagram, that's just S H E R I D A N R U T H.
